The pieces our team keeps reaching for — chosen for fit, feel, and how long they'll actually last.
The 550 nails the retro-court look without trying too hard, and the leather softens beautifully after a week. Goes with jeans or shorts.
Best OverallGenuinely warm 700-fill down that packs down small. Overkill for a mild fall, but a lifesaver once the wind picks up.
Best for WinterA straight-leg 501 in raw or rinsed indigo is the one pair you'll wear until they fall apart — and they take years to.
Best ValueThe Better Sweater fleece works as a mid-layer or on its own. Recycled polyester, holds up to constant washing.

A few things we've learned from years of returns, restocks, and wearing our own inventory.
A 12oz denim or a 300gsm fleece will outlast a flimsy 8oz version by years. Heavier weaves resist pilling and hold their shape wash after wash. If a spec sheet lists the fabric weight, that's usually a good sign the brand cares.
Leather sneakers like the Dunk or 550 loosen up about half a size. Raw denim relaxes at the waist and thigh. When you're between sizes on these, size down. Technical running shoes like the Gel-Kayano run true — stick to your usual.
Jackets with replaceable zippers, resoleable shoes, and fleeces you can patch are worth the extra $20 upfront. A Carhartt jacket you re-wax every few seasons costs less per wear than three fast-fashion coats.
The Ultraboost and Gel-Kayano are built for actual running and daily mileage. The Air Max 90 and Dunk Low are lifestyle shoes — comfortable for walking, but not the pick for a half-marathon. Buying the right category saves your feet and your wallet.
Our four most-asked-about pairs, side by side.

Real reviews from people who wear this stuff daily.
★★★★★"Bought the North Face Nuptse for a trip to Chicago in January and honestly it was almost too warm walking around downtown — which is a good problem to have. Packs into its own pocket so it lived in my backpack the rest of the trip. Only gripe is the sizing runs a touch boxy, I probably could've gone down from L to M."
★★★★★"I've bought Levi's 501s three times now, always from a different store, and these came in exactly as described — raw indigo, no weird factory smell, stitching all clean. They're stiff for the first week like every raw pair, so don't panic. After about ten wears they fit like they were made for me. Will keep coming back."
★★★★"The Better Sweater fleece is my go-to for the office where the AC is basically arctic. Warm without being bulky and the recycled material feels nice, not scratchy. Docking one star only because the color looked a shade darker online than in person — the 'stone' grey is lighter than the photos. Still wearing it four days a week though."
